Examinations

Having regular examinations with your dentist is one of the best things that you can do to ensure the health of your teeth and mouth. At your examination, our dentists will:

  • Check your medical history to ensure that we are aware of any health issues or medications that could affect the health of your teeth and gums.
  • Check for and assess your risk of oral cancer. This involves a thorough check of the soft tissues of your mouth particularly watching for any changes that might occur.
  • Examine your jaw, jaw joint, and the supporting muscles.
  • Examine your bite as this can greatly affect the health of your teeth, the viability of existing restorations, and the functioning of your jaw joint.
  • Take measurements of your gums to check for any gum disease.
  • Examine your teeth for wear, decay, cracks, pain, or any other potential dental problems.
  • Check your existing restorations (fillings, crowns, bridges, implants, etc) to ensure that they are intact and functioning as they should.
  • Take x-rays if the dentist feels they are necessary. X-rays are an invaluable diagnostic tool which are used to check for bone loss associated with gum disease, look for decay beneath fillings or other restorations, look for decay between teeth, check for areas of infection particularly at the root tip of the tooth, and to examine an area prior to treatment.
  • Talk through your oral hygiene routine and advise you of any action necessary to ensure the health of your teeth and gums.
  • Discuss treatment options available to remedy any current problems or issues you may have.
  • Discuss treatments available to enhance your smile should you wish to do so.

By seeing one of our dentists regularly for an examination, you can not only prevent problems with your teeth, gums, and mouth from occurring but you can also catch any issues early in order to minimise the level of treatment necessary to remedy a dental problem.
